Art Work by June Martin
ARTIST STATEMENT
My first art media was pencil drawing. I loved the way the paper accepted the graphite using various pressures. I could feel the drawing developing with each pull and slide of the pencil.
The next step of adding color was using acrylics which was a great method of having brilliant colors in thick or thin layers. It also dried Very fast. I then started painting in watercolor which brought back the tactile contact with paper and pigment that is so important to me.
The elegant rice paper - brush method of Sumi painting merged my love of flowing color and graphite drawing. The rice paper gently accepts the color and lends a smooth surface for pencil detailing.
My most recent favorite format of art is Fresco. I learned the skill from a master Italian fresco painter who refurbished many famous church frescos in Italy. The materials are concrete, plaster and lime water mixed with dry pigment. It is very hands on,very messy and lots of fun.
